What is A.Word.A.Day?
The music and magic of words--that's what A.Word.A.Day (AWAD) is all about.
AWAD (ISSN: 1524-6884) is a daily electronic publication from
the wordserver at Wordsmith.Org.
AWAD includes a vocabulary word, its definition, pronunciation
information with audio clip, etymology, usage example, quotation, and
other interesting tidbits about words to subscribers
every day. You can think of it as a word trek where we explore strange new
words. Words are usually selected around a theme every week.
There is no charge to subscribe to AWAD.

What is a wordserver, then?
Wordserver is a term Anu Garg coined, as a generic name for the server which
runs words related services. Wordserver is essentially what its name
implies - server of words. Besides A.Word.A.Day, it runs many
other reference/fun services and
performs functions such as processing subscription
requests, keeping logs, generating statistics etc.

Who created this stuff?
Yours truly.
It began as an idea for displaying a word and its definition on his
terminal when Anu Garg logged on every morning during his graduate
studies. Later,
he thought, "Wouldn't it be great if other people could also receive
this?" And a wordserver was born. (March 14, 1994)

S2art AT alltel.net Ronald Allen Stewart
Ronald explains: "This sender's address was chosen with regard to past
professional status as the Staff Intelligence Officer, i.e., `S2' of
special task-oriented units during my service as a U.S. Marine; and by
considering what Allen Dulles referred to as the "arts of intelligence":
thus combined = S2art. This, too, oddly enough sounds very much like my
surname Stewart. The ISP name (alltel.net) is strictly a coincidence.
Should any Intelligence Officer ever have a net of such literality, i.e.,
`all tell"; that would be an even greater coincidence!"

What is X-Bonus?
X-Bonus is the daily quote, a bonus feature of AWAD. The reason the
quotes are called X-Bonus, is historical. Previously, the quotes used to
appear in the email headers. Internet conventions require that
non-standard headers be preceded by an X (for eXperimental) and the name
became X-Bonus. Even though the quotes have come down to the message body,
the name X-Bonus continues.
If you'd like to add to this quote pool, you are welcome to send your
favorite quotes to (words AT wordsmith.org).
Please send them in this format:
Brevity is the soul of wit. -William Shakespeare, poet and dramatist (1564-1616)

What is AWADmail and how can I get it?
AWADmail is a periodic feature of AWAD. It consists
of your letters, feedback on AWAD postings, queries, and other miscellany.
You do not have to do anything to receive AWADmail. All subscribers of
AWAD get AWADmail too.
To get past issues of AWADmail, send a message to:
Make the subject line:
Where nn is the issue number.
E.g. to get the first issue of AWADmail, the command would be:
On the Web, AWADmail columns are available here.

How can I be a Guest Wordsmith?

You can also request guidelines by email by sending a blank message with
the subject line: "Guest Wordsmith" (without the quotes) to
wsmith@wordsmith.org.

How can I help you?
We will be able to devote our time in more productive matters if you
follow these few suggestions:
- Send all commands to the address:
wsmith@wordsmith.org.
Use (garg AT wordsmith.org) only
if you want to send mail to Anu Garg.
- If your account is no longer going to be active, please
unsubscribe before you leave, instead of letting me sort
the bounced messages from your expired address.
- Do not setup vacation programs on your account if you are
going to be away for some time. If you really must, use
an intelligent program which honors bulk mail conventions
and sends back at the most only one vacation message during a period.
- If there is a quota on the maximum size of your mailbox,
keep it under limit. It'll help in minimizing bounced messages.
Thank you for your cooperation.

I didn't receive today's word/deleted it/... Could you please resend it to me?
It is not possible for me to send out repeats of word postings to
individual subscribers. You can see any missing words in the archives
wordsmith.org/awad/archives.html or get them by sending
"archive"
command to the wordserver (see Q.4). Archives are also available on
WWW site.

Can I set a link to AWAD Web site?
You are welcome to make a link to AWAD. You may find HTML code and banners useful.

What program do you use to generate the mailing list stats?
Anu Garg created a package called Listat that
is available for free download. If you run a mailing list of your
own, you may find it useful.

I am not receiving A.Word.A.Day every day - what's wrong?
There are many possible problems which can lead to non-receipt of
A.Word.A.Day. We do attempt delivery to everyone on the list every day,
and retry failed attempts for up to two days before giving up.
If you are not receiving AWAD at all, the first thing to do is check to
see if you are still subscribed to the list by trying to re-subscribe.
If you are able to re-subscribe, this probably means that we had removed
you from the list, usually as a result of repeated failures to deliver
mail to you. If we do automatically remove you, we will make an attempt
to send you notification via email, although it is quite possible that
this message will fail to be delivered as well.
If you are having a problem with intermittent delivery, no delivery,
or if you repeatedly become unsubscribed to the list, you can
contact our postmaster at postmaster @ wordsmith.org.
[NOTE: do not send administrative requests (subscribe, unsubscribe,
address change, etc.) to this address - see Questions 4-6 above for
instructions on how to accomplish these things. Any such requests
sent to the postmaster will be ignored!]
We do ask, when you have a problem, that you try to verify that the
problem is not at your end before contacting us. You can find some
tips below which may help to troubleshoot the problem. If you do need
to contact us, please provide the following information:
- Your name, and the address you are (were) subscribed to the list with.
- A brief description of the problem. Include some details, i.e.:
- Are you receiving AWAD intermittently? Not at all?
- Approximately when did the problem start? Was it OK before that?
- Do you repeatedly become unsubscribed?
- Are others at your organization/domain having the same problem?
- Did you talk to you local administrators? What did they say?
Please be patient -
dealing with these problems can take a while. It is usually much easier
and faster to find a resolution with the cooperation of your local
administrators, so please get them involved if possible.
If you are receiving AWAD intermittently, or if you tried to resubscribe
and were told that you are already subscribed, then the problem is
happening in-transit. A good place to start here is with your own system
administrators and/or support staff, they should have logs of delivery
attempts and may be able to diagnose the problem. If they cannot, you
can have them contact our postmaster.
A particularly disturbing trend that we have found is that an increasing
number of sites are mistakenly blocking A.Word.A.Day as 'spam' or 'junk'
mail. If you do contact your system administrators, you may want to ask
them about this. It's an honest mistake, usually done on
the basis of mail logs without looking at the content of the
messages. Please let them know that wordsmith is a non-commercial,
subscription-only service; most of the time they will remove the 'block'
and you will again be able to receive A.Word.A.Day.
You can see any postings you have missed in the archives. The archives
are available on the Web at
wordsmith.org/awad/archives.html.
You may get them by email by sending an "archive" command to the wordserver
(see command list).
