ETYMOLOGY:
From Hawaiian ʻaʻā (to burn). Earliest documented use: 1859.
NOTES:
Aa is one of the two kinds of lava typically found in Hawaiian volcanoes.
The other kind is pahoehoe, one with a smooth, ropy surface.
