PRONUNCIATION:
(SHUHT-eye)

MEANING:
noun: Sleep.

ETYMOLOGY:
Describing the literal shutting of one’s eyes when sleeping. Earliest documented use: 1899.

USAGE:
“Zaifa was discreetly taking 40 winks near the edge of our boat. It was probably her first shuteye in more than 20 hours.”
