This week's theme: terms from law.

A person summoned as a prospective juror.

[From Latin venire (to come), truncation of the term venire facias ("you should cause to come", directing a sheriff to summon people to serve as jurors) + man.]

Here are two related terms, often used interchangeably: venire: the panel of prospective jurors venire facias: the writ asking an official to summon a jury

-Anu Garg (words at wordsmith.org)

"Nearly every venireman wanted to join the jury, if for no other reason than that it appeared to offer a front-row seat for the proceedings." Edward J. Larson; Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial And America's Continuing Debate over Science And Religion; Basic Books; 2006.

X-Bonus
