ETYMOLOGY:
From Greek chthon (earth). Ultimately from the Indo-European root dhghem-
(earth), which also sprouted human, homicide, humble, homage, chameleon,
chamomile, inhume, exhume, and
Persian zamindar (landholder). Earliest documented use: 1882.
USAGE:
