From Latin aequi- (equal) + Old French pois (weight), from Latin pendere
(to weigh). Ultimately from the Indo-European root (s)pen- (to draw,
to spin), which is also the source of pendulum, spider, pound, pansy,
pendant, ponder, appendix, penthouse, depend, and spontaneous.
