MEANING:
Looking gaunt or exhausted, as from fatigue, suffering, hunger, age, etc.
ETYMOLOGY:
Of uncertain origin, apparently from Old French hagard (wild falcon),
perhaps influenced by the word hag. The word is still used for a hawk
captured as an adult.
USAGE:
