Via Spanish/French, from Latin in- (not) + transigere (to settle).
Ultimately from the Indo-European root ag- (to drive, draw), which
is also the fount of such words as act, agent, agitate, litigate,
synagogue, and ambassador. Earliest documented use: 1879.
