From Latin palpare (to touch, caress), from palpus (palm, stroke,
caress). Ultimately from the Indo-European root pal- (to touch, feel,
or shake), which also gave us palpate, palpitate, feel, and sprachgefuhl.
Earliest documented use: 1395.
