(puh-NOOR-ee-uhs, -NYOOR-)

MEANING:
adjective:
1. Extremely poor.
2. Extremely frugal or stingy.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin penuriosus (needy), from penuria (want, need). Earliest documented use: 1590.

USAGE:
