ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin assiduus, from assidere (to attend to, to sit down to), from
ad- (toward) + sedere (to sit). Ultimately from the Indo-European root sed-
(to sit) that is also the source of sit, chair, saddle, assess, sediment,
soot, cathedral, and tetrahedron.
