ETYMOLOGY:
After Milan, Italy, from where women's wares were imported. First recorded use: 1530.
NOTES:
The word used to appear as the derogatory term "man milliner" implying
someone who busies himself with trifling occupations. Poet Robert Southey said
in 1796: "I look upon a man milliner not only as one of the most despicable
members of society, but as one of the most injurious."
The term for someone who deals in men's furnishings is haberdasher.
